Bearzerker
Well Met Travelers,
now a few of you keen-eyed adventurers may have noticed this little gem in my Open Legend spotlight, but most of you probably wrote it off as a typo. let me assure you that this is not the case, for a bearzerker is an archetype that I created in Open Legend just to Give it a test drive.
For those of you who did not read my open legend spotlight, it can be found: here
The rules for open legend, so you can see what all of this gibberish means, can be found: here
Now for a bearzerker. A bearzerker is based on the Old Norse Berzerkers. In Norse religion, berzerkers were warriors who were believed to channel the spirits of bears to make them ferocious in combat, often charging in without armor.
I took this a step further. A bearzerker is a special warrior who possesses 2 souls, both his own soul and that of a bear. This could be due to one of his parents being a lycanthrope, a pact made with nature upon the child's birth, or any number of other reasons. Like a berzerker, the bearzerker is possessed with a wild battle rage, but instead of entering a frenzied state, the Bearzerker becomes an angry bear tearing through the front ranks of the enemy.
Now for the meat and potatoes of this post. The Stats
Using the Open Legend RPG Rules system, and starting at level 1.
40 Attribute Points
Agility 1- 1 point
Fortitude 4- 10 points
Might 4- 10 points
Presence 3- 6 points
Persuasion 2- 3 points
Learning -1
Perception 2- 3
Will 2 -3 points
Movement- 2- 3points
The physical stats are pretty self-explanatory, he is a good warrior on his own.
presence because I imagine him as large and intimidating, but friendly if you are on his good side
Persuasion because you cannot be muscle all of the time, plus I'm basing him on Norse culture, and the Vikings could be charming
Learning symbolizes his knowledge of nature and other basic things he would need to know to survive in a rough wilderness.
Perception because a hunter/wild man should be always watching out for threats.
Will because he should have the mentality that he always wants to survive.
Movement is so that he can haste himself, for the bear spirit gives him supernatural reflexes if he taps into it.- I considered boon focus haste for Higher levels
The defenses and Hp are formulas, and I will let you do the math
Next, his feat points are all going to be spent on alternate form, so that he can become a bear.
He will start with 2 perks and one flaw (of course you can change this for your character, this is just how I see him).
Nature's Ally- because of the bear spirit within you, people and creatures connected to the land can sense your deep respect for the natural order. Wild animals are more receptive to your desires, primitive tribes give you the benefit of the doubt by assuming you do not have destructive intentions, and you can typically gain an audience with an elusive Druid or Shaman in a given region who shares your goal in defending nature.
Brute.-While others might convince with a silver tongue, you speak the universal language of fear. Once per game session, if you make a show of physical force, you can use your Might attribute for a Persuasion roll. If your Persuasion score is already greater than or equal to your Might score, you get advantage 1 on the roll.
Hot-Tempered- Partially due to the angry bear within, and partially due to a lack of patience, Your fuse is short and your explosions are destructive. Sometimes your anger boils slowly over time and other times it erupts completely unexpectedly. But when you do fly off the handle, things rarely go well for you.
Bear Form
Agility-2- 3points
Fortitude 4- 10 pints
Might 5 -15 points
Presence 3 - 6 points
Will 3- 6 points
Feats- 3 points- second tier of alternate form
Battle Trance- Rage
perks and flaws
Resilient- You are exceptionally difficult to kill or wear down. Once per game session, you can automatically succeed a Fortitude action roll of Challenge Rating less than or equal to 10 + twice your Fortitude score.
Courageous. Not so much courage, as sheer raw bloodlust, Once per game session, as a free action you can cancel all negative effects afflicting you that relate to fear or low morale.
Bloodlust-Battle isn’t just a way of life, it is the way of life. There isn’t a conflict you’ve encountered that wasn’t best solved with steel or lead, and your allies will have a hard time convincing you otherwise. You are prone to starting fights when they aren’t necessary and prolonging them even after the enemy has surrendered.
THat's it think, there you have a bearzerker, ready to drop into your home games at level 1
Now I know that both of his forms are combat focused, but he is a bestial warrior. Humans form has more social attributes than bear form, but the bear form is hardier and more difficult to bring down. I can see the differences growing as these two level up, but for now, that is how they play out.
until we meet again,
Farewell and Safe Journeys Travelers.
