The Planescape: Tempus
Well Met Travelers,
So, as promised, I am writing a post on one of the planes in my universe.
The Breakdown of the planes can be found: Here
The First of my planes, Ostium, can be found under my entry about Echos, Here
This week I am doing an entry on Tempus, The Celestial Clock.
Tempus is the plane of time and fate. The landscape is a large, flat porcelain-like disk with large brass runes (a clock face) and a large spire at its center. The spire supports several series of metal hands that track time on each of the other planes. Not only does this show what time it is on these planes, but it creates the time on the plane; should the clock stop, time shall stop with it. Hovering over the spire is a set of twin stars that orbit one another; this is what every other plane calls the sun.
At the top of the spire of Time lies the Loom of Fate, an artifact that weaves all of the threads of possible futures together into a tapestry of the present. As it weaves, fabric rolls out a window of the spire and across the clock face. This fabric is the entire recorded history of everything. This fabric eventually reaches the edge of the clock face where it falls off. Where it falls, it forms the Sea of Eons. The Sea is the location of Historical events so old that few alive can even remember their existence, events like the creation of Humanity or the Draco-Jotun Wars.
Life on Tempus is complex and beautiful. Most forms of life here do not follow the classic definition, for most lifeforms on Tempus are complex clockwork Constructs. There are so many varieties of these that describing them becomes difficult. The basic definition of these Creatures is that they, similar to the plane, are crafted of Bronze and many intricate gears and systems. Most life on the plane lives beneath the clock face, in cities built among its mechanisms.
One of the more important life forms on the plane are the Weavers. Weavers are giant clockwork spiders that watch over the Loom of Fate and Tempus itself. They are responsible for maintaining order. The Queen of the Weavers, Textrix, serves as the mount for the Eldest of the Norns. Weavers appear, as with everything on this plane, as giant Brass Spiders with spools of Copper Wire that they use instead of webbing.
Another Important form of Life on Tempus is the Norns. Every Plane of Existence has at least one immortal Creature living within its confines to defend the plane from cataclysm. The Norns are the Immortals of the Tempus. Another common Name for the Norns is the Sisters Fate. This name comes from the fact that defending Tempus also means defending time and fate from being defiled. Think of the Norns as time Witches. They are the original practitioners of chronomancy, but they are more akin to witches than wizards because they did not formally study magic as wizards do.
The Norns appear as haggard and hunched over old crones, but made out of the clockwork of the rest of the plane. The oldest is the wisest, but she can scarcely see or hear, and her physical strength is fading. She is also the most powerful chronomancer. The middle is the strongest, but she lacks wisdom. She is the defender of fate. The youngest has the best perception, but she fears many things. She has the gentlest touch and often interacts with the loom, fixing the problems that occur in times fabric.
Another creature that dwells on Tempus resides in the Sea of Eons. The Temporal Leviathan is this creature. Modeled and named after the sea creatures on other planes, this Leviathan is the self-proclaimed destroyer of time. He prophesizes that when Echos's precious universe finally breaks down, the Leviathan will rise from the sea and consume the loom of fate, becoming the Rival of Echos. This is most likely just propaganda that he spreads, but either way, for now, he swims through the Sea.
He appears to be the Lobster variant of the Leviathan. His purpose on the plane is to consume the boats of possibility that float on the sea. Attached to each of these boats is a thread of the future, one of the possible futures that the loom processes into the present. The Leviathan consumes these boats, and each boat he consumes destroys that thread, making it impossible for that future to occur.
The last important group that exists on this plane is the Chronomancers who serve the Norns. These are mortal wizards who use their power to police time and ensure that all events occur as they are supposed to. This often means that they hunt down other chronomancers who change history, whether purposefully or accidentally.
I think that's all for this plane,
As always, leave any questions in the comments, and happy gaming.
Until We Meet again,
Farewell and Safe Journeys, Travelers.
