Planescape: The Dreamscape
Well Met Travelers,
Sorry for being a little sparse this past week, I was on vacation, but now I return at full power.
EDIT: Last Week, I talked about Elysium.
Today, I am doing another write up on the planes from my homebrew world, and this week is one of my favorite planes, The Dreamscape.
The Dreamscape is a place of slumber and rest. Every mind enters the dreamscape during slumber, creating a dream where that mind is free to wander, but the mind is trapped within the dream. This is the extent that most ever reach in the dreamscape. However, entering the dreamscape physically reveals a very different place than the dreams of a sleeping mind.
The landscape of the Dreamscape is a vast, endless desert in the middle of the night. The stars form no constellations familiar to any who travel to the Dreamscape. The landscape varies depending on the night because each night new dreams rise out of the sand, meaning that the dreams from the night before are no longer there.
The reason that the stars form no familiar constellations is that the stars are not truly stars. Each star is a dream. When a dream ends, rather than disappearing back into the sand, it is turned into glass and placed in the sky. This is where vivid recurring dreams come from, when the glass dreams are brought down from the sky to be repeated.
Other than this, there is not much in the dreamscape. There are Oases of Dreams in which travelers can find brief respite, for while traveling in the dreamscape, it is impossible to sleep except while around these Oases, and even then one does not dream.
The other variation of the landscape is the Hovel of Slumber, the Home of Sersomnium, the Sand Man, the Sleeping Lord. This is a small adobe shack that is furnished with only a bed, a table, and a map that marks the location of where each dream is located and to whom it belongs.
Walking into a dream while physically present on the plane gives you the ability to interact with the dream and the dreamer, your intentions determine how the person interacts.
There are few living creatures in the dreamscape, but those who do exist have learned to thrive in this Desert of Dreams.
The most important creature dwelling in the Dreamscape is Sersomnium. Sersomnium is a humanoid creature of almost no form, wrapped in bandages, similar to the mummies that were created in his image. He wears a tattered and ruined cloak and leans on a staff that is reminiscent of a glassblower's tool. Peering from behind the bandages are his eyes, two pinpricks of white light. Those who lock eyes with Sersomnium feel peaceful and warm.
Sersomnium wanders the Desert of Dreams, his duty is to protect the dreams of those in his care, the sleepers of the universe. He uses his staff to turn the dying dreams into the glass that hangs in the sky forever. To defend sleepers, he often turns elements of dreams against invaders.
Dream Watchers
Dream Watchers are creatures similar in form to Sersomnium, humanoids wrapped in bandages with light shining from within. They wander the wastes, similar to their master, watching and admiring the dreams of mortal creatures. They each carry staves like his to initiate the defenses of a dream until their master can come to their aid.
Korkein
Korkein are the kin of Unicorns. They are sand-colored horse-like creatures each with a single bronze horn that curls from its head. They dance across the sands of sleep, leaving no marks of their passing. They are creatures of bliss, and their presence in a dream is sure to make it a wonderful and happy one.
Dream Eaters
An enemy of Sersomnium and his watchers are the Baku, or Dream Eaters. These Tiger-like creatures try to eat the dreams while the dreamer slumbers. As this happens, the dream begins to unravel and make less and less sense. If a Baku successfully consumes a full dream, the dreamer awakens and very likely has been driven mad by the experience.
Mara
Mara are creatures from which the word nightmare is derived. They are infernal creatures that resemble deformed angels with broken limbs and twisted wings. A Mare enters a dream, finds a nice spot to nest, and begins corrupting a dream from within. It is the goal of Sersomnium and his watchers to find and stop this, this is why we wake up screaming from a nightmare right before we die, for if a Mare kills the dreamer in the dream, the dreamer dies.
And I Believe that is all for the Dreamscape.
As always, leave a comment down below discussing what you thought about this post and how you would use it in your world.
