People Of Antediluvian: Fungals

Well Met Travelers,

Welcome to Another of my worldbuilding sessions.

The last time, I wrote about the crafty gnomes, a race of wanderers and tinkerers.

This time, I will delve into another of the races unique to my world, a race that my good friend Owl, the Lovely Ivory Queen, and I crafted over the course of a lazy afternoon. That race is known as the Fungals.

Fungals are an interesting race in the world of Antediluvian. This group, unlike all other races in the world, was not born by the gods. Instead, Fungals were created at the end of the age of dawn. During this time, the Gods and their titan children waged war against the old gods, creatures from beyond the stars, creatures that have existed outside of the known universe, and during this war, they defeated an Old God known today only as That Which Sleeps. While fighting this creature, Omodule, a titan warrior, was slain. Like the rest of his kind, his soul did not enter Elysium, for that is the realm for mortal souls. Instead, his soul found rest within a patch of subterranean mushrooms. The presence of Omodule's soul caused the mushroom to grow to gigantic size and granted it a supernatural sentience. This giant fungus lived out centuries forgotten within the Deep, the dark expanses of cave that lie below Antediluvian (this cavern is mostly empty save for the Fungals and the creatures created by the dreams of That Which Sleeps). This mushroom, known as Hericiudule, dropped its spores, and where these spores fell, humanoid funguses grew up. The funguses became known as Fungals, and they shared a hivemind with their creator (which contained all of the knowledge that was possessed by Omodule).

The appearances of these Fungals is quite varied, for they can appear as any kind of mushroom or fungus that grows within the depths of the earth. These creatures always appear in vaguely humanoid forms; two legs, two arms, and a head. These creatures usually stand about seven feet tall, but they usually carry a hunch, and thus they appear about 6.5 feet tall. These creatures have no mouths, thus they communicate through spores that connect the recipient to the hivemind and Hericiudule. Their eyes are usually black pinpricks.

The culture of Fungals is one of peace and magic. The Fungals are an enlightened people, for they share all of the knowledge passed on to them from the Titans before they were corrupted by war. This means that the fungals do not seek to oppress and destroy. They live in peace with one another and all races of the surface world. They build their cities at every known entrance to the surface from the Deep. They spend much of their time honing their minds, their martial arts, and their magic in defense of world above. Besides acting as a repository of knowledge that they share with the Great Mushroom, they have made it their purpose to ensure that That Which Sleeps remains asleep and fight off the monsters created by its dreams.

Government among the Fungals is a unique, for all fungals are tied to Hericiudule, thus it understands all that occurs in fungal society. It resides in the Glade known as Mógū línjiàn kòngdì. This glade resides at the major entrance to the Deep, but not all Fungals live in this glade, for As has been said, they guard the different entrances to the deep, thus in those Fungal cities where the Great Mushroom does not lie, Mandarins govern and keep contact with the Hericiudule to enforce Fungal Laws and Customs. The worst punishment for a breach of law is exile to the surface world, the only place that fungals know of where the hivemind cannot be accessed.

Magic among the Fungals is an interesting concept because of their connection to the ancient Titan knowledge. Hericiudule conserved all of the knowledge it had in life; this includes the knowledge of magic, including the old magic. The fungals are masters of all forms of magic, Arcane, Divine, Natural, and Old. They inherit this understanding of the old magic from Hericiudule's memories. This makes them the only culture in the world that understands the Truth of this magic.

Unlike all of the other races that I have covered in the past, Fungals have no true language because they do not communicate using verbal language, they communicate by transmitting spores that carry a specific message that most mortal minds interpret as Fungals speaking in their minds.

Marriage and Funerary Customs

Again in this department, the Fungals differ from other races. Fungals see themselves as extensions of the Great Mushroom, and they do not feel emotions in the same way that other mortals do, thus they do not fall in love. This means that they do not marry.

When a fungal dies, it releases a large number of spores, and it is the duty of any nearby fungals to ensure that these spores reach Hericiudule. These special spores contain all of the memories of the deceased Fungal; they are released so that they may be stored in the mind of Great Mushroom where the memories will be maintained for all eternity.

I believe that is all for this week. Sorry for the delays on this, the Holidays have not been kind on my schedule.

Until Next Time,
Farewell and Safe Journeys, Travelers.
