Planescape: Pyrah

Well Met Travelers,

Welcome to another of my world building sessions. Last week, I discussed Terra, the realm of earth elementals and other such creatures.

This week, I will be delving into Pyrah, a land of fire, magma, and extreme temperatures.

So Pyrah, like Terra and Aqua, is one of the mirror planes, a primordial reflection of Antediluvian.

This reflection is almost a perfect reflection. The landscape, however, is far hotter and more barren than normal for Antediluvian. Everywhere that Water should be, magma flows instead. In some places, fire just erupts from the ground.

All of Antediluvian's mountains are volcanic in Pyrah. Deserts are cinders instead of sand. The plant life in Pyrah is all dry and brown, for the heat of Pyrah's internal Volcanism withers plants before they can truly blossom. There are a few plants that have adapted to Pyrah's harsh climate, feeding on the magma that lies just beneath the ashy soil.

The Seasons in Pryah are an interesting, for they change how the plane looks, quite drastically. During the summer, the core of Pyrah burns so hot that the flames on the surface turn blue. During winter, Ash storms rage so badly that the fires suffocate, making the plane more habitable to non-elemental creatures. Spring brings the blossoming of Fledgling fires slowly emerging through the freshly fallen ash. Autumn brings with it the fire's fear of suffocation, so this is the season that gives birth to fire elementals, for those flames who have gathered some form of sentience uproot themselves from the earth and become children of Infernus.

As with all planes, these places are so expansive that I cannot name all of the locations, but I shall list a few of the Major ones.

Vulkanik Kolamag

This is the Home of Infernus the Blazing Lord. The interesting thing about this Aztec style Ziggurat is that it lies below a whirlpool of magma. The magma in this pool will not harm you, but there is no oxygen, so it is impossible to breathe without prior planning. This temple is where the souls of those sacrificed to Infernus arrive upon death.

Kraz'Herimdal

This city is built in the Romanesque style. It is the home of the Graudlin creatures. The entire city is suspended over the Caldera of a volcano. THe industry of this city relies heavily upon this volcano, for it provides both a perfect source of heat for smelting metal and ash that can be mixed with the limited water on the plane to create a durable pottery that is highly sought after by other cultures.

Lantern of Sinead

The Lantern of Sinead is a  Large Brazier set at the center of a ring of standing stones. It was constructed roughly 43 years ago by the Druidess Sinead. Sinead was known for her intense pyromania, as she thought that fire was the perfect aspect of nature, for while it destroyed, it also reinvigorated the soil with ash so that new life could grow up in place of the old. Sinead came to Pyrah on Spiritual Journey. It is said that in a dream, she was told to construct the lantern. When she did, she learned the secrets of Primordial flame, or so the sagas say. When she returned from Pyrah, she burned with a new found confidence that Strengthened the Druids until her death. Rumor states that the lantern lies dormant, waiting to be reignited by a new druid, upon whom it will bestow its blessing.

Cinderhelm

The Cradle of Birth for elementals. While elementals can be created anywhere on the plane, something about the Cinderhelm results in far more elementals coming into being than any other. This extinct cinder cone volcano seems to provide exactly the right circumstances for elementals to spring into being. Often called Dire Elementals, the elementals born in Cinderhelm are far larger and far more powerful than those spawned elsewhere.

Citadel of Betrayal

This Fortress lies at the Heart of the Ash Wastes, and it is home to the Frost Lich Kazardin. Kazardin was once a young mage who thought that infusing Ancient flames into frost magic would create spells so powerful that none would stand before him, but he was spurned by the creatures of Pyrah for even dreaming of such a thing. This rejection would set Kazardin on a path of hatred and vengeance. He constructed the Citadel to defy Infenus and his elementals. This Icy stronghold and the aura of cold that surrounds it place this region into an eternal winter. Kazardin sits upon his icy throne, hoping one day to expand his reach and perhaps find a way to corrupt elementals.

Creatures

Infernus The Blazing Lord

This creature is the Lord of Primordial Fire and the Immortal lord of this realm. He is the lesser god of fire and the embodiment of the flame. He is a wrathful being full of fury and grants power only to those who supply him with praise and occasionally fresh souls.

Fire Elementals

The Children of Infernus, these creatures appear as he does, but smaller. These creatures, much like mortal creatures of Antediluvian, have their own drives, their own ambitions, their own hates, their own loves.

Graudlin

These creatures resemble the minotaur of Antediluvian, but with one key difference. They are literally on fire. These creatures are elemental in every sense of the word. They live under the rule of the Empire of Steel (their governing body). They make their living by smelting metals and creating pottery from the volcano beneath their home.

The Lich of Ice Magic that Dwells in the Citadel of Betrayal. He spends his days conspiring against the Blazing Lord and he hopes one day to learn how to turn elementals against their eternal master.

I think that is all for this time. As always, leave your thoughts in the comments, and if you want to see more from me, click the follow button in the sidebar.
