Planescape: The Fairie

Well Met Travelers,

Welcome to another world building session. Last week, I covered the Realm of the Obscured, a realm of evil, darkness, and fear.

This week, I shall delve into the twin realm to the Realm of the Obscured, the Fairie. As mentioned in my previous post, the Fairie and obscured Realm have an interesting relationship, for they share a common border with a bridge that spans the distance between them.

The Fairie is a place of Whimsy and Shenanigans. The landscape is fantastical and wondrous; it seems completely impossible to exist, mountains that grow to unimaginable heights, trees growing in strange colors, pretty much anything you can imagine can occur here.

In the same way that color seems to be muted in the Realm of the Obscured, the world of the Fey appears like the pages of an old story book. Every so often, there are cracks like old oil paint and the color is similar to the colors in children's stories.

The Fairie lends its name to Fairie Tales. Many of the stories that we tell our children actually happened in the Fairie, however, many of these stories happened differently and often less pleasant than what we tell children.

The Fairie is divided into several domains claimed by each of the Fairie Lords. These lords are divided into Two Courts with two Transitionary Lords. These are the Summer and Winter Courts and the Lord of Spring and the Autumnal Lady. These Courts Rule the Fairie during their respective seasons and the Transitionary Lords oversee the Transition of Power between courts.

There are far too many interesting locations to discuss in this post, but I shall mark a few here.

The High Hawthorn

The High Hawthorn Tree is the home of the Dryad Queen Titania. This Massive tree has grown and been cultured into the shape of a massive palace in which Titania remains bound from the Fall Equinox until the Spring Solstice. This tree is the tree to which the Fairie Queen is tied and around it are the trees of many of her dryad servants.

The Frost Keep

The Frost Keep is a large Palace Carved from Ice. It is the home of Queen Mab, the Mistress of the Winter Court. Like her Sister Titania, She is bound to her palace from the Spring Equinox until the Fall Equinox. This illustrious palace houses many of the Winter Court fey. It sits amid a barren frozen Wasteland far to the north of the Fairie.

Warding Wood

The Warding wood is a dense forest far to the east. The forest is composed of Yew and Rowan Trees. This Region is the Border between the Realm of the Obscured and the Fairie. Being that this is the border region, there is clear evidence of the Realm of the Obscured's influence on the region, black mist drifting about at ankle height, darkening of the eyes of creatures nearby. Occasionally, Servants of the Dark Masters make it here before being hunted down.

Castle of the Huntsmaster

The Castle of the Huntsmaster is a Large and Foreboding fortress deep within the Warding Wood. This structure is the Home of the Lord of the Wild Hunt. From this castle, he trains and commands a legion of Unseelie Elves (Ancestors of Dark Elves) who stalk the region to protect it from The Dark Masters. The Castle is tall, built in the Gothic Style; it is carved from Dark Stone.

Bear Rock

This Tall Rock Juts up from the Earth in the Eastern regions of the Fairie. Beneath it is a series of Caves that wind deep beneath the earth. At the base of this Rock is the Wooden throne that seats the King of the Bears. Bees are abundant in this region, collecting honey from the surrounding meadow in the King's name.

Iron Scar

Iron Scar is the name of the region that borders the Bear King's Territory and Crumbling Camelot that was once an attack on the Fairie by angry mortals during the age of Darkness. A giant Iron Spike was driven into the heart of The Fairie Lord of Reflection. Being that the Fairie Lords are Immortal but that Iron wounds Fey Creatures, the iron twisted his form into that of the Rusted King. His realm, once made of Glistening, Reflective Metals, is now a rusted, ruined, and barren land with the Tower of Corrosion at its center.

Haunted Keep

The Haunted Keep is the name given to the Fey Siblings of the Summer Court. Together they are assigned the status of a single Fairie Lord. They are Cirrus, Tilodius, and Sorche. Not Coincidentally, these are the Names Respectively of the White, Gray, and Black Moons of Antediluvian. The name Haunted comes from the fact that they are the Fairie Lords of Illusion and trickery.

Crumbling Camelot

This is a realm that was once the Home of the Once and Future King, and may be again. For now, it is governed by the Fairie Lady, Morgan Le Fey. This appears to be a large medieval Kingdom ruined and long since overgrown. Magic is very prevalent in this region. The land is also filled with the Fairie Knights of the Round Table, immortal knights who serve the Fairie Lord known as the Once and Future King who was deposed from his thrown and seeks to claim it back.

Mad M's Crystal Cave

A cave Hidden Deep within Crumbling Camelot. This is the home of Morgan's rival and the Deposed King's advisor Merlin, Known as Mad M by those who live nearby, for he has hidden his identity from the outsiders. He seeks to rethrone the Once and Future King.

Weeping Willow's Walk

The Weeping Willow's Walk is a Tower made from a great willow Tree that overlooks the Ever Reaching River. This is the Realm of the River King. The Willow Walk is also one of the few safe ways to cross the Ever Reaching River, for the River King Can raise a stone path from below the river to cross it.

Palace of Seasons

The Palace of Seasons is the Seat of power for whichever court happens to be ruling. It is also the Home to Oberon, the Fairie King. He is not a part of either court but takes on aspects of whichever court is in power. He is consort to both Mab and Titania. This is a grand and illustrious palace designed to be the Perfect place of Residence for the courts.

The Verdant Castle

This castle is completely overtaken by nature, but is warm and inviting to all. This is the Home of the Green Knight, the Fairie Lord of Honor and Hospitality.

There are many Creatures that Dwell in the Fairie, the most general being fairies, dryads, sprites, pixies, satyrs, and the like. Now the more Specific Creatures are as follows.

Most of these are Fairie lords, those who are not will be noted.

Titania

Titania is the Queen of the Dryads, as stated above, she is tied to the High Hawthorn Tree and is Queen of the Summer Court. She is selfish and Jealous, but she is also kind and passionate. She resembles a dryad with her long hair, tanned skin, and use of natural elements in her clothes and hair.

Queen Mab

Mab is the Queen of the Unseelie Fey. She is the queen of frost, snow, and sorcery. She is cold, cunning, and very bitter. She has pale skin, white hair, and piercing Gray eyes. She seeks to find a way to extend the Duration of winter so that she may reign supreme in the Fairie.

This mysterious Fairie Lord Rules over the border between the Fairie and the Realm of the Obscured. He is a tall, foreboding, and imposing figure. For sport, he hunts every manner of mortal creature and some immortal creatures. He belongs to the Winter Court but cares for no court, for his true passion is to protect the Fairie from the Dark Masters. He and his particular group of Unseelie Elves use dark magic from the realm of the obscured to fight the Agents of the Dark Masters. He even carries a lantern that can pierce the illusions that these servants bear.

The Bear King

The Bear King is a large humanoid with a beard and affinity for bears. He governs his realm in peace but is a formidable foe if angered. He cares for all of the World's Ursine Creatures. He is terse and friendly, and he is always happy to be host to lost Travelers.

The Rusted King

Once Long ago, this Fairie Lord was the Lord of Reflection, the King of Metal Working and Reflections. He and his Mirror Knights once stood vigilant, guarding the portal between Antediluvian and the Fairie. When Mortals invaded in the Age of Darkness, they invaded his realm. He and his knights fought back, but the iron weapons of the Mortals stung and killed the Fey, and when struck, the Lord of Reflection became the rusted king, and his realm fell into disrepair. Only a few of the Mirror Knights remain.

The Fairie Siblings

Cirrus, Tilodius, and Sorche are the Siblings of Moonlight. They share their names with the three moons of Antediluvian, or perhaps it is more appropriate to say that they are the three moons of Antediluvian. Cirrus is a woman clad in white with long blonde hair and striking silver eyes. Tilodius is a man dressed in gray with long silver hair and steel gray eyes. Sorche is a woman clad in black with short black hair and amber eyes. These three are the masters of illusion.

Morgan Le Fey

Morgan is a Fairie Lord of Crumbling Camelot, she is sister to the Once and Future King. They had fought for years over Camelot while he was on the Throne. He seeks to regain the throne, but he is too weak to face her directly, so he acts through proxies until he can face her. She has long black hair, fair skin, and sterling blue eyes.

The Once and Future King

Arthur, the Once and Future King, once ruled over the Realm of Camelot while his sister Morgan sought a way to bring him down. Now that she is in power, he is in hiding in a secret place, unknown even to his allies. He is tall, blonde, and dressed in heavy, silver armor. He carries a sword whose blade seems to be made from ice.

Merlin

Known as Mad M to many in Camelot, this non-lord, was once the advisor to the Once and Future King. Now, he receives messages from the former lord and relays them to the King's allies. He is an old man dressed in blue robes. He has long silver hair and a long beard to match it. He has bright violet eyes that are far younger than his body.

The River King

This Fairie Lord is the master of the Endless River. He appears as an elf with long blue hair and equally blue eyes. His skin is golden like the color of water when the sunset hits it. He is tended to by many aquatic fey. He governs the crossing of the river. He is warm and welcoming most of the time, and offers his home as a place of respite.

Oberon

King of the Fairies and consort to both Fairie Queens. He is a tall muscular man whose appearance changes depending on the court in power. He lives in the Palace of Seasons and tends to it caringly. He is a regal being with an even temper, but he is impassionate and cold.

The Green Kight

The Fairie Lord of Honor and Hospitality. He is a great man in green armor. He has green skin, green hair, and green eyes. He loves to test mortals and immortals alike on their honor and moral code. He also likes to make a game of it, often tricking people into revealing their true colors.

Seelie Elves

These elves are the ancestors of most elves in Antediluvian. They are regal figures who consider most creatures, even other elves to be below themselves. These elves typically serve the summer court.

Unseelie Elves

These elves are the ancestors of the Dark elves in Antediluvian. They are almost perfect mirrors of their Seelie twins, but dark reflections. They find themselves to be the most perfect form of mortal, looking down on both Seelie and dark elves, as well as all other elves. They typically serve the elves in the winter court.

Mirror Knights

Servants of the Former Lord of Reflection. These Elven Knights dress in armor made from polished metal that makes it shine like mirrors. This armor makes them immune to most forms of magic, while still forming a decent protective layer.
