Planescape: The Convergence

Well Met Travelers,

Welcome to another one of my world building sessions. For those of you who have been following these planescape posts since the beginning, I wanted to say that were at the final three. I have this and two others before I must search for some new material to publish on Mondays.

So last week, I published my post about Aura, the plane of air. This week, I shall be delving into the Convergence, a plane of volatile elements and chaos.

The convergence, unlike the elemental planes that came prior, is not a mirror of Antediluvian. This plane is a covered by a raging elemental storm, as each element clambers for control that it cannot maintain. These storms leave most of the plane barren and lifeless. The little life that can dwell here is confined to small pockets of protection.

It is hard, if not impossible to map the plane, for while many speculate that the plane has all of Antediluvian's continents, constant tectonic activity has resulted in the constant shifting and changing of the landscape. There are various calamities that plague this plane. The tectonic shift results in massive earthquakes, and internal volcanism results and massive volcanoes. The moving of the plates causes the oceans to be unstable and Tsunamis and hurricanes are Frequent. Tornadoes and other windstorm are also a massive fear. The greatest threat happens when two or more of these events happen in the same place and cause what are referred to as Fear Storms.

Key Locations: Note: All of these Locations exist within Bubbles of Respite from the Storms

The Serene Palace

The Home of Rayna, This palace is almost elvish in style, for it is formed of living wood and stone, carefully shaped into form. This is a place where many gather to ask of and give thanks to the Mother of Nature.

Elemental Monasteries

Not a single location, as much as a series of monasteries built across the plane by worshipers of the Elemental Lords. These bastions of faith were constructed both to show how hardy the clerics and monks are that live there, but also because in the convergence, it is easier to channel elemental energy through magic. Many come here to train and harness the elemental magic here, but others come to cloister themselves away from the world.

The World Tree

This Ash Tree is home to a dryad who was planted by Rayna in the early days of the Planescape. It has become a booming center for trade on this plane, as at the base of this tree a large city has grown up, where any seeking refuge for any reason can come to escape.

The Dragon Hatchery

For Centuries, This Sanctuary has been a place that Dragons could come to hatch their eggs without fear of Loot-Crazed Adventurers coming in and smashing them. This place has been Watched over by the Great Shira. Dragons may come to her for protection of their eggs, but these Dragons must follow an ancient code of rules to prevent conflict and dictate payment for Shira's services.

The Thoughtful Bison

This Tavern was built by a retired adventurer named Andrew Parkinson. Having Traveled this plane in his adventuring career, He built it as a place of respite for any adventurers who may be unfortunate enough to wander these wastes.

Known as the Mother of Nature, this Being is the Immortal Mistress of the Convergence. She was crafted out of a fragment of each elemental lords as a means of keeping them in line, for left to their own devices, they would have destroyed the world. She is a very sensual being, taking many lovers and not discriminating about sex, gender, or species. She acts as a lesser goddess of Nature and will share her power with any who show love from the natural world. She is often worshiped by Druids.

Hybrid Elementals

Due to the Nature of The Convergence, sentience may among an element as it is colliding with another element, creating these hybridized versions, such as the magma or lightning elementals. These creatures, much like mortal creatures of Antediluvian, have their own drives, their own ambitions, their own hates, their own loves.

Shira, Blessed (pronounced Bless ed) of Dragons

While she appears as a young human woman with gray hair and Soft Violet eyes, Shira is as old as the Hatchery itself. It is not known what manner of creature she is, but it is well known that she genuinely cares for all young dragons and eggs placed her care. She follows a strict set of rules that are carved into the stonework of the Hatchery that dictates the behavior of all who enter and the payment of Shira for services rendered.

Idaphise, Nature's Lover

The Dryad attached to the World Tree is considered the unofficial mayor of the town at the tree's base. She was the first and remains one of Rayna's many lovers. She appears charred and scorched from many centuries of holding back fire storms from sweeping over the city below. She is compassionate, but she is also slow to trust new people, for outsiders have burned her in the past.

Various Religious Orders

Throughout the plane, many religious orders are dedicated to the elemental lords or the Mother of Nature, and these orders settle in the various monasteries across the plane.

Andrew Parkinson

This eccentric Forest Gnome retired from a life of adventuring. When he retired, he found ordinary civilian life was not for him, and the Romani-esque blood of his forest gnome heritage led him to create the Thoughtful Bison Tavern. He thought it would be funny to build a tavern out in a dangerous location, plus it is a boon for those traveling this hellish landscape.

I think that is all for this time. As always, leave your thoughts in the comments, and if you want to see more from me, click this button:

Until Next Time,
