Planescape: Antediluvian
Well Met Travelers,
Welcome to the Last of my Planescape posts. This is it, you have made it to the end. Last week, I covered the Aether, the plane of magic and spirits.
This week, I shall be delving into the realm of Antediluvian itself, the realm of the mortal races, and the setting for most adventures in this world.
Antediluvian is divided into eight continents with various cultures, landscapes, and political entities. In future posts, I may delve into the Individual Continents, but for now, this is going to be an overview of the plane as a whole.
As can be seen from My Discourse on Antediluvian's History, there are many world-shattering events that have set Antediluvian into the state that it is in. The map above shows just how varied the Landscape can be, but I think that the political entities are more interesting, for while much of Antediluvian is abandoned, almost all of Antediluvian's surface is claimed by empires, Kingdoms, Theocracies, and Magocracies.
While Antediluvian is a Truly Remarkable place, it is nearly impossible to discuss the plane in generalities, for Antediluvian is like a puzzle, each piece in itself is interesting, but when put together it creates an elaborate picture.
So this week, rather than Discussing major Locations as I do in other Posts, I have decided to discuss Antediluvian's Major Empires and other political Entities.
Magocracy of Highthorn- The Magocracy of Highthorn is a Nation of Mages and Bards who have banded together for their own mutual protection and for the furtherment of their study. Beyond being a governmental system for a political realm, the Conclave of Magisters control the training of mages and enforce the laws of magic. All mages are beholden to the laws of the Conclave.
Leigeheim Theocracy- The Leigeheim Theocracy is a Nation of Clerics and other religious persons. Leigeheim is a major entity because it is the home of the Highest Ranking priests and Temples in the realm. The Theocracy operates as a Political entity, but it is also known for using its religious clout to manipulate the faithful, worldwide.
Draconian Empire- This empire is the largest conglomeration of Dracons in the world. These Dracons style themselves in a magocratic society, but rule in the Empire is bestowed upon Aether-Touched who can trace their ancestry to some ancient dragon. The current royal line tracing its ancestry to Chrindall the Scourge of Gods, a Legendary red dragon.
The Kingdom of Sunderhall- A Dwarven Kingdom ruled over by Clan Whurain, Sunderhall lies in the Northwestern part of the Continent colloquially called the Thunderlands. This Kingdom is known for its recent return from a centuries-long exile, as Dogur Whurain became the first King Under the Mountain in nearly 1000 years. This Kingdom is known also for the production of legendary works of stone and metal, even by dwarven standards.
The Confederation of Ioshon- This is a confederation of several city-states from the Continent of Ioshon. While each has its own individual government, they form a council of Governors who are responsible for Ioshon's interaction with the outside world.
Ovid Oligarchy- This small island chain is known for its rulership by a few select Halfling families including but not limited to the Tealeaf family, the Boulderhill family, and the Oakbottom family. The reason that these families are able to rule is because in the Ovid Oligarchy, right to rule is based on the Number of Sheep that a family owns, and the ruling Oligarchs were able to persuade the Dragon, Ginarth, not to eat their sheep, appeasing him with treasure.
Esyna Thalore- This Queendom is the governing body of the Snow Elves of the Frozen North. This Governmental structure is bicameral, for while the Queen can enact laws affecting the Nobility, she must select a Viceroy from the other noble families to rule and pass laws governing the People of the Middle and lower classes.
Half-Giant Jarldom- While not by any means a united people, the Half-Giants are lead by the biggest and strongest among them. These people can be found in practically any cold or mountainous climate. Each Group is Headed by a Jarl. The Jarl is advised by a group of Half-Giant "Nobles" known as Karls. Below them are all of the other members of the giant clan.
Tan'Thalas-This High elven Society is governed by the House of the Twisted Raven. As with most high elven societies, the people of Tan'Thalas enjoy magic in all of its forms, but they utilize arcane and divine magic most often. The political structure of Tan'Thalas features a monarchy where the Eldest child, regardless of gender, rules the throne.
Bweal Brorn- This is the Capital city of the Dark Elf Dominion. This city has 5 pillars of Rule: The High Priestess, The Arch-Mage, the Monarch, The Warlord, and the Assassin. Each of these pillars fulfulls a different role in the Dark Elf Society. The High Priestess Communes with Miraleen, the Dark Elves' Matron. The Priestess often acts without consulting the other Pillars, for she sees herself as holding divine right to act as she pleases. The Archmage is the Second Pillar, he/she is responsible for enforcing Highthorn's will upon the Mages of the Dark Elf society, as well as lending aid to the other pillars when needed. The Monarch is the center of political life in the Dark Elf Dominion, overseeing the daily life of his people. The warlord is responsible for organizing military operations among the dark elf people. The assassin completes the pillars of the church by carrying out the covert dealings for the other pillars, the assassins of the crown do the things that the other pillars cannot be seen doing.
Cloddrog-Cloddrog is the capital city of the Minotaur people. It is the Location of residence of the Cloddrog Assembly, the Republican Senate the Minotaur Government. This is the system in which the different regions of the minotaur state elect Statesmen to represent them in the Cloddrog Assembly.
Gijak Ifut- While not an official capital city, Gijak Ifut is the Home of the yearly council of Orc Shaman. While orcish tribes do not usually interact with one another except for the occasional warbands, once per year, the Shaman of the Tribes lead their people to the Island home where the Orcs believe that their race was born. At this council, the Shaman meet with the ArchShaman who Lives at Gijak Ifut. Here they punish any members of their order who have broken with Taboo as well as establish any rules that the Tribes must follow. Also during this meeting, the orcs trade members to keep fresh blood in their tribes and compete in games.
Major Players- All of the Following are the Members of the Brotherhood of the Whispering Ring. They are the immortal creatures of this plane
Ander Shattersoul- The Sage Arcanum of the magocracy. He is a "Human" male who wears the Red Robes. He has a Dark and troubled personality. He cares deeply for his friends and family and will fight to defend what he cares about. He craves magic and hates being denied. His official Title is Lord Ander Shattersoul; Sage Arcanum of the Highthornian Magocracy; His Magisterial Magnificence; Lord of Lore, Legends, and Legerdemain; Grand Magus; The Eye of Knowedge; Guardian of Highthorn.
Thia Shattersoul-Founder of the Bard College of Ivory and current headmaster. A Half-Drow with long Red hair, emerald green eyes, and dark skin. She is wed to the Sage Arcanum of the Magocracy. She is a quiet, cunning sort of lass. She has the most intricate and colorful mantle of all. She enjoys teaching people and wants stories and songs to live on for years to come.
Balamer Shargrim-This Golden Dracon (actually a Polymorphed Gold Dragon) rules as the high lord of the Champions of Dragonshire. He advises the emperor of the Draconian empire and is growing paranoid in his old age. He wears armor made from the bones of Corduth the Dragon Lord from the age of Dragons. He is a very honorable and kind man, but as I said, he grows quite paranoid in recent years.
Balazar Drachendandion-The first (and currently only) Beast Master at the College of Beasts. He is a black dracon and is usually laid back, though he can be the epitome of serious when needed. He has a passion for the creatures of the world and deeply cares for his friends, though he pretends he doesn't. On the occassions when he leaves his island, his passage is usually marked by sightings of his uniquely colored wyvern (red and blue).
Morlinde- The Alpha of a Druid Circle for abused humanoids, Morlinde is the heart of this circle. She takes care to respect nature and urges her fellows to do the same. She has a small personality at first, giving way to a large kindness and equally large promiscuis streak. She is a wood elf who has long red hair, amber eyes, and tawny skin.
Agravaine Bellarad- This man is a Faustling Vampire with Bright red skin, short black hair, and large horns that curl from his head. He operates the guild of thieves and assassins known as Ouroboros. He takes everything with a complete disregard to the gravity of the situation and has the most crude sense of humor. He is almost always happy, though this may be a facade for emotions that lie deeper.
Rinn Liadon (Grim Arroway) - Founder and current Harbinger of the Order of the Misty Arrowhead.
Rinn was always a very quiet and reserved Human after being raised by Elves. He never spoke unless he absolutely had to, and when he did, you would pay full attention to what he had to say. Rinn is a fearsome fighter, and it is folly to challenge him to a duel for you will never see him until there is an arrow lodged deep in your chest.
Although Rinn seems like he shows no emotion, he is actually one of the most caring humans out there. Rinn cares for his pet owl, Terestai, and he even has a love interest by the name of Calynn, the leader of the Assassin's Guild.
Dogur Whurain-Dogur Whurain is the first King Under the Mountain in Sunderhall in nearly 1000 years. He is large for a dwarf standing at over 5' tall. He has wheat colored skin with red hair and eyes brighter green than emeralds. Dogur speaks only in third person. He cares greatly for his friends and his people and would do anything for them.
I think that is all for this time. As always, leave your thoughts in the comments, and if you want to see more from me, click the Follow Button over in the sidebar
Until Next Time,
Farewell and Safe Journeys, Travelers.
