Echos of Eldritch Major Players: Balamer Shargrim
Well Met Travelers,
It's been a while since I wrote the last of these Major Players Articles, so I thought it was about time for one. Last Time I did Ander Shattersoul, the Single most powerful Archmage in the World.
This Week, I decided to cover another of the Brotherhood of the Whispering Ring, High Lord Balamer "The Dragonslayer" Shargrim. Balamer is the first character created by one of the people in my gaming group, and as such, I have elevated him to Near Godhood in Antediluvian. He, like the other members of the Brotherhood, has been made Immortal by Echos.
Balamer is a Golden-Scaled Dracon. He lived a very normal life in a small town of Dracons that had sheltered themselves away from the oppression of the Great Draconic Lords. He grew up learning the art of the Forge. He was very talented and had even learned that using his breath to light the forge gave the metal special properties (a unique trait among Dracons). Balamer was preparing to propose an engagement to Silvra Lithtuun, but that day is when Balamer's Life was turned on its head.
The day that he was to propose, Balamer had gathered the locket that he spent months forging and headed toward the home of his beloved. Halfway there, the village warning bells rang out, and a great black shape filled the sky, Corduth the Undying had found them. Balamer watched town hall burn in the necrotic fire of the Undead Wyrm's breath. Balamer quickly found his beloved and his mother and sister, and he then ushered them towards his home and the cellar that lie beneath it.
Before He reached his home, Corduth unleashed his breath upon the town square in which Balamer and his loved ones were running. Balamer threw himself in between his family and the Wyrm, trying to shield them with his fireproof (rare among Dracons) scales. Unfortunately, the fire wrapped around Balamer and engulfed his family. This left him scarred with handprints from his dying family clinging to him.
Filled with rage, he tried to chase down the Dragon. As he was running, he saw a glittering spear plummeting from the sky. Balamer tried to grab it, and he succeeded. He used it against the Great Black Undead Wyrm, severing one of Corduth's Toes. The Dragon Backhanded Balamer, throwing him back against the rocks. Balamer watched the dragon fly away as he slowly lost consciousness.
In his dreams, He heard the voice of the Scintillating Dragon, speak to him. Cameroth revealed to Balamer that the young Dracon was actually an ancient Gold Dragon that had been trapped in humanoid form as a punishment for his arrogance, and that a good and humble life would lead to Balamer's return to Dragon form. Charged with this knowledge and some divinely granted powers, Balamer was charged with the task of Killing the Great Wyrm.
Not long into his journey beyond his mountainous home, Balamer encountered a young Rinn Liadon, and the two quickly became friends. When Rinn returned to meet Ander, Balamer went with him. Being a smith, Balamer forged magical Rings of Whispers (Enchanted by Ander), which became the namesake of the Brotherhood. Together the Three found and Secured one of the Ancient Mage forges, A lost relic from the Age of Magic that allowed for the mass production of magic items.
Before long, Balamer's quest, Ander's Desire to save his master, and Rinn's desire to see the world lead to the trio leaving the safety of the Lost Lands and entering the realm of the Dragon Lords. After Meeting with the other members of the Brotherhood of the whispering ring, and defeating several of the Dragon Lords, Balamer became a symbol of Freedom and quickly an army grew up around the Brotherhood.
Balamer led this army against Corduth, and with the help of His friends, the Dragon was slain.
Balamer is now the High Lord of the Champions of Dragonshire, but he has a secret. At the end of the war, He was restored to his True Draconic form, but he maintains the Facade of the Dracon he once was to keep up appearances. As this body ages, he has begun the construction of a Tomb, which will function as a stronghold to protect religious relics and a place for his Dragon form to hoard its gold.
Balamer (in humanoid form) dresses in armor made from the bones of Corduth and wears a cloak of Balamusk (a large apex predator from the Northlands) skin. He has golden scales and stunning Blue eyes that seem to gaze into your very soul. He is a large muscular Dracon. His weapon of choice is his holy, shape-changing weapon granted to him by the dragon god.
Balamer is brave and Honorable. This often means that he is the first to charge into battle, especially if he can protect his friends or the weak. He is kind and cunning. He will very rarely do something that will deliberately harm someone without just cause. He is Clever, for while he is an immortal dragon, he is slowly aging his form to not cause question among the Draconian Empire. In doing so, he is pretending that in his age, he is growing paranoid. This concept is helpful in allowing him to amass his hoard.
He is a vastly powerful paladin whose powers are supplemented by his Draconic abilities. This makes Balamer perhaps the most powerful Priest of Cameroth that lives.
In Dragon form, He looks like any other Golden dragon, but he is blessed with the Gift of the Great Wyrm. This is a blessing bestowed to only one Dragon of each kind at a time, which allows them to grow larger and far more powerful than any of their kin, but it often makes them wiser and less ambitious as well.
I think that is all for this time. Later I will post about how I would write his stats in Open Legend. If you enjoyed this post, click the follow button in the sidebar, and post any comments in the comments below.
Until Next Time,
Farewell and Safe Journeys, Travelers.
