People of Antediluvian: Elves

Well Met Travelers,

Welcome to the first in my new series of posts. Now that I have talked about all of the Plains that Exist, I am going to switch my focus to the Peoples and places of my Homebrew World.

I decided to start with people of the realms, and not just any race either. I decided to start with a staple of the fantasy genre, the elves.

The premise of this People of Antediluvian series is to discuss the races and their cultures as well as explain why the races of my world differ from the cultures of other fantasy worlds. I hope you enjoy.

As I said, Elves have been a staple of fantasy literature and RPGs since Tolkien's Lord of the Rings and their Prequal, the Hobbit. But, Tolkien's elves were a very tired race of immortals, and it seems fantasy has strayed far from that, especially in RPGs.

The Elves of Antediluvian are not very different from Tolkien's Elves in appearance. They are tall, often Ranging from 5'9'' for the shortest of women to well over 6' for men. All Elves have the pointed ears, but none have them to the ridiculous degrees of the Elves of World of Warcraft (Save for the Elves of the Fairie Realm). Elves are usually slender of build, though they are capable of possessing incredible strength. Now, this is about where the similarities end among all Elven people, from here on out, I must discuss each elven subrace: Seelie, Unseelie, High, Wood, Snow, Desert, and Sea.

Before I discuss the subraces of elves, I should discuss the History of the Elven people. The Elves were created by the god Daratrine, and he placed them in the Fairie to work with the fey and other creatures who dwell in this realm. Immediately, the Elves were drawn to the Fairie Lords and Ladies, but a rift grew between them as they were each drawn to different courts. The Final Division between the original elven peoples came when the Unseelie elves began the use of black magic in service of their fey lords.

Subraces:

Seelie Elves

This race of elves is the pinnacle of Elfkind. They are the embodiment of everything that an elf should be. This race of elf lives in the Fairie and Dwells among the Summer Court of Fey. They tend to be whimsical yet haughty (even by elven standards). They possess a potent talent for arcane and Natural Magics. The culture of these elves involves a passion for freedom and doing as they please, so long as they do not violate the laws of the Fairie Lords. These elves tend to be extremely emotional, swinging from anger to fear to Overzealous joy in a matter of minutes. Other than being elves, these elves are no different from the actions of other fey. Their Political structures are very similar to those of the High Elves, but rather than having the church in their lives, a Fey lord often holds that position of Privilege.

The Average appearance of Seelie elves involves longer, often exaggerated, ears and glowing eyes. Their hair tends to be lighter, ranging from Strawberry-blonde to silver and beyond. They often adorn themselves in bright colors and flowing garments that accentuate their natural beauty. Many among their ranks paint their faces with bright colored elven designs, and their mages tend to tattoo magical formulae on their faces in ink that is close to their natural skin color, these tattoos then glow when the mage casts spells.

Marriage and Funerary Customs

The Seelie Elf marriage Custom takes place during a week-long ceremony full of ritual and tradition. During this time, the bride and groom exchange numerous vows and promises to care for one another. This ritual is bound by a Mage, a Cleric, a Druid, and Sometimes an Archfey.

The rare funeral ritual of the Seelie Elves involves a slow transmutation process of turning the Dead into a Tree Sapling. This Sapling is then transported the Ancient Grove where the Elf Race was born to be planted and give guidance to future generations.

Unseelie Elves

This race of  Elves are the Servitors of the Winter Court. This group of elves is vastly misunderstood, for while they are practitioners of Dark Magic, they do it to save all of elvenkind. Early into the existence of Elvenkind, before the crossing of the veil into Antediluvian, the Fairie was invaded by servants of the Dark Masters from the Realm of the Obscured. The Unseelie Elves used the Shadow magic that they had been taught by the Fairie lords of the Winter Court. The Seelie Elves were revolted by this despite the fact that it saved them from enslavement or extermination.

Unseelie Elves are much colder and more calculating than their other elven kin. They also live in the Fairie and Dwell in the winter court. They are not nearly as whimsical as their Seelie counterparts. They have a much more militant lifestyle than the Seelie elves, for all Unseelie elves are trained in either swordplay or shadow magic, for they feel that it is their duty, despite their exile from their ancestral elven homes, to defend the Fairie and other elves from the Looming Threat of the Dark Masters. Their Political Structure involves a Hierarchy with a Monarch (Either a cleric or Mage), below the monarch are the Mages and Clerics, both of whom practice some form of Shadow Magic (Clerics are usually clerics of a Fairie Lord of the Winter Court). Below these groups are the Generals and military of the Unseelie Elves. Below the army (which is most of the population) are the slaves and criminals.

Unseelie elves have very stark differences of appearance to their Seelie Cousins. They have ashen skin with veins blackened by the Black Magic that they harness. Their hair tends to be either dark brown, black, or white, but occasionally other colors do appear. Piercings are common among Unseelie Elves, many of their warriors getting new piercings with each victory. This gives these warriors monstrous appearances. They dress in mostly blacks and purples with garments that are both form-fitting and practical.

Marriage and Funerary Customs

The Marriage ritual of the Unseelie Elves involves the Sharing of a Blood Bond between the two Elves to be wed. During this bond, a Mage and Cleric speak the most profane Black Magic rituals essentially making the Two individuals into one. At the end of the Ritual, the Marriage must be ritually consumated (I know that this is not PG, but this is how these elves would act).

The Funerary Ritual of the Unseelie Elves involves the draining of the Deceased's blood, mixing the blood into an ichor that can be used in black magic rites. The body is then interred into the family crypt.

High Elves
https://i.pinimg.com/originals/77/e6/89/77e689633dd14162168d3d58cd28ccc2.jpg

These are the descendants of the first elves to enter Antediluvian. High Elves are the Haughty cousins of all other elves. This race is the most magically attuned of the elves, showing talent in all forms of magic (Arcane, Natural, and Divine) They live their lives in a very strict society, in which the Royal Family is a puppet, beholden to the Whims of the Archmage, High Priest, and Archdruid of the city. These three entities do not want to be known as the true power, so they empower these entities to rule. This rigid lifestyle continues down to every member of society, as your social class among the high elves' society determines what careers you can enter. Most craftsmen and farmers live among the lower classes, although some of the lower classes may enter the army. The aristocracy is able to enter the Church, the ranks of the Mages, the druids, and the upper ranks of the Military (such as the elite Falcon Knights and the Legendary Wind Blade Legion of Paladins).

Most High Elves share a common appearance. They are very similar in appearance to Seelie elves but with less exaggerated features. Their ears are not as pointed and their eyes do not glow. They tend to dress in golds and silvers, and they dress in ways that accentuate their features. They do not use the tattoos or war paint that the Seelie elves do. Their eye color ranges from violet to amber and includes many other colors that Humans consider exotic.

Marriage and Funerary Customs

The Marriage customs of the High Elves involves a very traditional 6-hour-long ritual in Archaic Elvish. This ritual is similar to the Seelie Elven Ceremony but far shorter and lacks the presence of a Fairie Lord.

The Funeral Rites of a High Elf involve the consecration of the Body by a Magic user of all three types of Magic. The Body is then interred into a tomb or crypt of some sort.

Wood Elves

Wood Elves are the descendants of the High Elves, early into the settlement of Antediluvian there was a sect of elves who wanted to live in harmony with nature. These elves broke from elven tradition and have formed several tribes across Antediluvian. They are more attuned to Divine and Natural magic over Arcane. Every member of these tribe serves an important purpose, the tribal leader will do just as menial labor as the poorest elf. Wood Elves have very few permanent settlements, Preferring to live more nomadic lives, settling in their cities only during the winter or in times of strife, such as the ancient orc-elf blood feud.

The Average appearance of Wood Elves is Tawny Skinned and Dark Haired. Their eyes range through green, brown, Hazel, and other colors that humans would consider more natural. Their Clothing tends to be more attuned to the natural landscape and lends itself well to sneaking. They dress in mostly furs and naturally colors fabrics such as green and brown. Their clothing is far more practical and more human than the clothes of High Elves.

Marriage and Funerary Customs

The Marriage Ritual of Wood Elves is less formal than the High Elves. The ritual involves an hour-long Ceremony overseen by a Druid in which the couple exchanges promises of love and respect until the end of time. Like all elven ceremonies, this ritual is sealed by the Exchanging of a ring (a practice which the humans stole).

The Funeral Ritual of Wood Elves involves a druid administering last rights to the deceased, and then the body is buried beneath the soil to add to the natural evironment.

Dark Elves
https://i.pinimg.com/736x/c7/5f/19/c75f19f02237fce89bbe3b28c5d15511--bard-female-drow-female.jpg

The Dark Elves are the Unseelie Elves' response to the Creation of the High Elf Kingdoms in Antediluvian. This group is far less militant than their Unseelie Cousins. They Show an aptitude for Arcane and Divine Magic. They tend to act like High Elves, Haughty, and they believe themselves to be superior to all other elves. As I said about their Unseelie Ancestors, these creatures are not evil, they are just reviled for their ancestral history of Dark Magic. Their Political Structure is quite unique, for they have a government of 5 pillars: Monarchy, Magi, Church, Military, and Assassins. Their monarch rules of the Social Situation. Magi and Church govern arcane and Religious life in the city. The Generals govern over the military situations. Assassins fulfill the aspects of the government that the other branches cannot be seen doing.
https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/rising-chaos/images/4/4e/Drow_Armour.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20130818111524
The Average dark elf has dark gray almost black skin and exotic eye color. Their skin can range from ashen gray to near black. Their eyes can range through red, green, blue and other uncommon colors. They tend to dress similarly to Unseelie Elves in Dark Colors and Practical Clothing, many of the Dark Elves clothes show raven Motifs in honor of their Goddess.

Marriage and Funerary Customs

The Marriage Customs of the Dark Elves involves the Sealing of vows of honor, loyalty, and love overseen by A Mage and a Cleric of Miraleen. This ceremony involves the Betrothed grasping Eachother by the arm, while the cleric and mage cast binding spells to hold the marriage together (such binding spells could kill an elf who kills their spouse).

Funeral Rights of Dark Elves involve commending the Deceased to Miraleen, and then the body is transported to a pocket dimension connected to a plaque in the Shrine of Ancestors in Bweal Brorn, the Dark Elf Capital.

Snow Elves
https://img00.deviantart.net/0a01/i/2012/009/3/d/skyrim_last_of_the_snow_elves_by_1rich1-d4lt53r.jpg

This race of  Elves Descended from the High Elves, seeking isolation, but not wishing to return to their Fairie Home. These Elves show a similar aptitude to the High Elves in all forms of Magic, However, they favor Arcane and Natural Magic. Their Society is split into a Bicameral Queendom. Their Queen Creates all of the laws that affect the Nobility and appoints a Viceroy. The Viceroy creates all of the laws that affect the common people. Their personalities are not very different from those of high elves; it seems a common thread that each group of elves finds themselves superior to others.
https://i.pinimg.com/originals/c1/8a/57/c18a57b34af022e9f525199e09906121.jpg

The Snow Elves have a unique appearance. They are pale of skin, pale of hair, and bright of eyes. Their skin tones are paler than most other races. Their hair comes in whites and creams. They adorn themselves in garments of bright whites and deep blacks trimmed with gold. Snow Elves have a natural defense against the cold, thus their garments are often light and flowing or light and form fitting.

Marriage and Funerary Customs

The Snow Elf Marriage Ceremony is very similar to a High Elven Ceremony, the differnces arise in what is added. The Couple Builds an igloo together and sets up an elaborate candle setup. The Ceremony Begins at sunset, but everything else is like a High Elven Ceremony.

Funerary rituals involve freezing the body in ice and setting it deep beneath the catacombs of whatever city they are from.

Desert Elves
https://i.pinimg.com/originals/d2/f9/32/d2f932b2d011835a34b80b82e5c9a518.jpg

Desert Elves are descendants of Wood Elves who were subjected to a magical Climatic Change that converted their entire home into Desert. These elves are attuned to Natural and Divine magic. They live in homes made of Adobe (imagine Jerusalem from Assassin's Creed). These elves fight daily for the survival of their people. Their political system is composed of a chieftain and a council of elders. This group takes the opinion of its people into account.  Druids and Shaman are major players in the society, for druids can use their magic to protect their people from the pseudonatural desert environment and shaman can pray to Salis the Purifier for aid.
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/W6fSNkKMCMs/hqdefault.jpg

Desert Elves are perhaps the most different of the elven people. Desert Elves are dark skinned. Their eyes are typically brown but can be other colors. Their hair ranges from black to red to brown, but their hair does not typically vary from that pattern. They tend to dress in clothes made of light cloth. Their clothes almost always offer some form of protection from the sun. Desert Elves are also very fond of Tattoos. The Attached Images should encapsulate the style of Desert Elves.

Marriage and Funerary Customs

The Desert Elf Marriage custom involves the man building a bonfire while the Wife hangs a sheet that she has spent the engagement weaving. The Ritual takes place between the bonfire in the sheet so that observers only see the silhouettes of the couple on the sheet. A shaman or druid then oversees a ceremony very similar to the wood elven ceremony. At the end of the Ceremony, the couple tears through the sheet, and a week-long celebration begins.

The funerary ritual of the wood elves involves a long druidic mummification ritual. This then leads the body being interred in the Desert Elven Hall of the Dead, where druids and shaman may commune with it in the future if need be.

I think that is all for this time. As always, leave your thoughts in the comments, and if you want to see more from me, click the Follow Button over in the sidebar
