People of Antediluvian: Muz'hada

Well Met, Travellers,

Welcome to another of my worldbuilding sessions.

Last time, I wrote about the Titan-blooded Jatte. This week, I will delve into the Muz'hada, a race of aquatic serpentine creatures found within a region of the ocean known as the Dragon Sea.

The Muz'hada are a serpentine race. They have long serpentine tales, humanoid torsos, and Snake-like heads (no legs). Their tails can be around 6-8 feet long, and the average Muz'hada sits upright around 6 feet, though variation can exist as they sit higher and lower on their tails. Scale color among the Muz'hada tends to be bright. Usually, the color is some form of green or blue, but red, yellow, orange, and white are not uncommon. Their reptilian nature means that they tend not to grow hair. Their eyes are also unique because rather than the round pupils of most other races, Muz'hada have more serpentine eyes with slit pupils. Eye color among them tends to be green, blue, brown, and yellow.

The clothing of the Muz'hada is simplistic in nature. They tend to wear clothing made of simple cotton or linen or fabric. Due to the aquatic nature of the Muz'hada, their clothing tends to be sparse, covering very little; it is more for adornment rather than body covering. Among their people, gold is a common commodity due to the excretions of the Leviathan upon which they live. This means that gold is utilized in nearly every aspect of Muz'hada clothing. The Muz'hada build their armor out of interlocking stone plates that are blessed by the Muz'hada Blood Priests.

The culture of the Muz'hada is very interesting due to their religion. The Muz'hada are the only race who buy and large worship Vadhumal the malformed god. For their worship and to protect them, Vadhumal gave them control over a Leviathan upon the back of which they built their only city, Mes'hado. This Leviathan is an essential part of the Muz'hada culture because to maintain control of the beast, the Muz'hada must sacrifice the still-beating heart of a humanoid creature at each of the major temples on the barrier Islands of the Dragon Sea. The Muz'hada are a heavily religious society because of their relation to Vadhumal and the Leviathan, to this end, their society is shaped by the Church of the Demon King. Their society is divided into different social orders, which are not based upon birth. After being laid, all Muz'hada eggs are handed over to the government, for when the eggs hatch, the children will be tested. The test will sort the children by their aptitude for divine magic, arcane magic, or physical prowess. Those who do not show promise in any of these fields will be commoners who carry out mercantile and physical labor tasks. Those who show a connection with the gods will be taken to the temple to join the ranks of the Nobility. Those who show signs of magical aptitude are sent to the Skol'Ara, the school of arcane study, to join the ranks of the Elite Mage corp of the King's Personal Guard, or to maintain the magical wards around the city. This society focuses on the strength and survival of the Muz'hada race.

The Muz'hada are a race of magically adept people. Their pact with the Malformed God has led to an affinity for divine power. It seems that the Muz'hada also have a deep connection to the flow of mana through the world, allowing them to be particularly effective with Arcane magic. A common aspect of Muz'hada magic is the use of blood. Many of their rituals and practices, both divine and arcane utilize some form of blood sacrifice to empower them. This is what has lead to the belief that the Dragon sea is home to dangerous sea monsters because the Muz'hada seize nearly every ship that sails into their harbor to have sacrifices for their ritual.

The government of the Muz'hada is extremely structured. At the Top of the government is the Priest-king/queen, the high priest of the Muz'hada religion who is in control of the navigation pattern of the Leviathan. Below this Priest-king is the hierarchy of the Church nobility who occupy the top tiers of Muz'hada social life. The military and mages occupy the next tier alongside the lower ranks of the Clerical order. The merchant and laborer class is the lowest level of society.

The Muz'hada speak a languages known as Jyk'had, it is a language that contains a lot of flowing elongated consonant sounds. Those of the priest class are versed in Araqoric, the language of demons, for these priests commune with demonic powers quite frequently. The average lifespan of the Muz'hada is roughly 60-70 years, but there are rumors of upper-class Muz'hada extending their lives to over 300 years.

Marriage and Funerary Customs

The marriage in Muz'hada society is an ancient tradition. When two Muz'hada decide to be wed, they are taken to the top of the great Ziggurat, and a Ritual is conducted under the guidance of marriage laws set down by the Demon King. During these rituals, the bride and groom spill blood onto the altar of the Malformed God. When the blood is mixed, it is blessed by the priest and mixed with holy water and sacred herbs. The mixture must then be imbibed by the couple who are from that point forward bound together as a couple.

The Funerary rituals of the Muz'hada involve the preservation and entombment of the dead. When a Muz'hada dies, the priests extract his or her blood and use sea salt extracted from the ocean surrounding their home to dry the body out. Once the body is dried, it is wrapped in linen bandages which have magical rituals scribed upon them in the blood of the deceased. These rituals preserve the body and protect it against water's decomposing effects, and they will reanimate the corpse to protect it's tomb from being robbed. The heart of the dead is kept in the temple in a jar. This canopic jar allows the dead to be controlled by the high priest should the need arise. The body is then entombed within the great ziggurat for safe keeping.

A note, Earlier I mentioned that some Muz'hada have found ways to live for hundreds of years. These creatures have been granted access to ancient rituals that use blood to sustain the body and spirit. The few Muz'hada who have been granted this gift have led their society into eras of greatness.

I think that is all for this time, let me know what you think.

Until Next Time,
Farewell and Safe Journeys, Travellers.
